The text we call the Tao Te Ching takes shape somewhere in the Warring States period, as the Zhou order disintegrates and rival courts hire strategists, moralists, and logicians by the hundred. Tradition assigns it to Laozi, an archivist of Zhou who, departing the failing state through the western pass, wrote five thousand characters at the gatekeeper's request and vanished. Scholarship sees a composite text stabilizing around the 4th century BC — the earliest physical witnesses are bamboo slips from a tomb at Guodian, c. 300 BC. Either way it is an answer to the same crisis Confucius answered a century earlier: what holds a world together when the old rites no longer do. Its answer — yield, soften, do not strive — is the more radical of the two.
